 THE WORKSHOP
This is always a very popular workshop with some repeat bookings every year - no doubt the beautiful village of Roundstone has a lot to do with that.  Five days active painting holiday in the most amazing scenery.  Surrounded by sea and mountains, Roundstone has been a magnet for artists and tourists for over a hundred years.

Outdoor painting - or Plein Air painting as it's called - is becoming increasingly popular in Ireland and globally, with many plein air festivals now taking place and local plein air painting groups setting up, so this is your chance to get up to speed in a wonderful type of painting activity - seeing Nature in all its colours, learning to cope with the challenges that outdoor painting offers you.

After a short morning session at our base studio when I share insights and tips with the class on different aspects of painting, we paint in different locations each day Mon-Thurs- weather permitting only - otherwise we stay indoors in our studio - and on the final day I base myself at our studio in the Roundstone Community Centre, helping participants who wish to add the finishing touches to the paintings they've created during the previous four days.

LANDSCAPES, SEASCAPES, HARBOURS
We'll paint seascapes, landscapes and harbourscapes and you'll discover my Ten Step process that builds confidence and speed in tackling the many challenges of painting outdoors in the beautiful west of Ireland.
I cover different topics each morning as I demonstrate my approach; we cover -
My Ten Steps to Great Painting, Composition & Design, Colour Harmony and Creating Real Depth in your paintings - on successive days, and on Friday I give you my Top Tips to Finish your Painting with real IMPACT, including how to add figures in your landscapes to enhance the painting.
From Tuesday morning, I'll also hold a short Supportive Critique session when y
ou can offer to have your previous day's painting reviewed and I will offer my opinion on what works well and what I might do to add to its quality and finish - nothing critical of your work - I don't believe in discouraging my students, quite the opposite as you'll see. And it's entirely optional to have your painting reviewed, but this short session proves to be extremely useful to all the class.

A MORE VARIED WEEK with more possibilities
This year, to provide more flexibility to participants, on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, there won't be any class sessions - you will have complete freedom to either continue painting untutored at our morning location, or move to another preferred location, or simply take a break from painting and use the time to visit other parts of Connemara.
Perhaps take photograph reference material for future paintings back home, or just to be a VISITOR for the rest of the day, maybe visiting Clifden, the Sky Road, Kylemore Abbey, Connemara National Park, Ballinahinch Castle gardens and much more,  before returning to Roundstone.
It gives you more flexibility to treat the week with a wider choice of being a serious painter, but also a tourist, or painting researcher, going for walks along the coastline, or just relaxing and do nothing except maybe lie on the local beaches and swim on these two afternoons. It's totally up to you !

MY APPROACH
is to share everything I know with you, in a relaxed and informal manner, through group tuition and demonstrations, and one-to-one advice while you paint - all done in a supportive, encouraging way.  I strongly believe that teaching art is a privilege, and that students should above all enjoy their experience in my workshop and hopefully will build their confidence, insight and ability.

WHAT LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE IS RECOMMENDED
This workshop is best suited to artists with at least a little painting experience - so they've had practice at setting up their painting gear, choosing brushes, squeezing out paint, mixing colours, and have painted a few paintings - the results really don't matter !!  Complete beginners will struggle with all those basics, and then trying to cope with out of doors as well.  So, it's ideal for Improvers, Intermediate and right up to Professional level painters - I've had several of those join me over the years with great feedback from them too!
ACCOMODATION
Once you've paid a deposit or full workshop fee (see BOOKING below) I will send you accomodation options in the locality, from hotels, B&Bs and AIRBnBs
MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT
Once you've paid a deposit or full workshop fee, I will also send you recommended minimum equipment and art materials you'll need for the workshop

QUESTIONS & QUERIES
You may have some questions - is the course suitable for me, am I experienced enough, and so on - no problem, just email me at [email protected] and I'll try to answer you as accurately as I can.
CHECK OUT  a selection of my landscape paintings or drawings under the PayPal section below AND  in my Gallery of Paintings page on this website - it will give you an idea of how and what I paint, usually outdoors, or 'en plein air' as the French would say.

BOOKING
Places are strictly limited, and fill up every year, so if you're interested to join me in 2025 - Please email me at [email protected] or through the 'contact' page on this website before paying any fee - to ensure there's a place available - I can't guarantee a place unless you do, even if you've paid a deposit.

The easiest way to pay is through the PayPal dropdown menu below - you only need a debit or credit card.
  • Click into the dropdown menu box below (directly under Roundstone 2025) that says Deposit - 100 Euro and select whichever payment option you wish - there's 3 options - Deposit (to hold your place), Full Fee and Balance Due (if you've already paid your Deposit).
  • For your Billing address details make sure you change the country from the American flag (default) and select Ireland instead from that dropdown menu choice.
If you need to pay by cheque just email me and ask for my postal address, but PayPal is by far the simplest way.

To select a payment choice - either Deposit or Balance Due or Full Fee - click into the box below (underneath Roundstone 2025) that says 'Deposit - 100 EUR' and the dropdown list of payment choices will appear; then click on your choice and and then click on the black 'Debit or Credit Card' bar below and you will be brought to the PayPal site; then just follow the onscreen instructions which are very straightforward to make your payment.    Thank you.
